A dynamic-looking crossover that delivers lots of passenger and load space and a comfortable ride, the Ford Edge is currently the American marque’s largest European SUV. The vehicle is well-equipped too, and it comes with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
The Edge is a crossover with a sense of purpose. It successfully straddles the line between rugged muscularity and eye-catching design, making it a vehicle that would grace any driveway. This SUV features 19-inch alloy wheels too, which are fitted as standard, as are a number of body-coloured fixtures, such as power-operated and heated door mirrors. Other labour-saving features include automatic headlights and windscreen wipers that allow you to concentrate on the important task of driving.
Not all five-seat cars can comfortably accommodate a quintet of full-size adults, but the Edge has no problems in this regard. There’s plenty of leg and headroom in each compartment, and front-row travellers are provided with heated sports-style positions too. An array of cubby spaces can be found throughout the cabin, so there’s always somewhere to place a drink or mobile phone. The Edge possesses a 602-litre boot space, which is one of the best in its class. With rear 60/40 split-folding seats dropped, cargo capacity increases to a very impressive 1,788 litres. Furthermore, the car’s low load sill and flat luggage bay makes loading and unloading as simple as can be.
A 2.0-litre 180bhp diesel engine is fitted beneath the Edge’s bonnet as standard. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and a four-wheel drivetrain, this delivers 400Nm of torque and 0-60mph in approximately 9.7 seconds. It also returns as much as 48.7mpg, and produces a 149g/km CO2 emission figure, making it the most efficient option available for the Edge.
Technology and safety
For your listening pleasure, a nine-speaker audio system is featured, which includes DAB digital radio, delivering an array of stations in crystal-clear sound quality. An eight-inch touchscreen provides intuitive control over the car’s satellite navigation system, which features voice-activation, 3D mapping and more besides.
The Edge is as safe a vehicle as one could hope for. It comes with an array of driver aids, such as Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane-keep Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking. The latter is a potentially life-saving piece of technology that monitors the movements of the vehicle ahead, and applies maximum braking pressure in order to prevent serious collisions.
