If you require a spacious and versatile people carrier, the Ford Galaxy really needs to be on your shortlist. What Car? describes the Galaxy as “an extremely practical and capable car that manages to be as fun to drive as you can expect an MPV to be”.
For such a sizeable people carrier, the Galaxy is blessed with a sleek, stylish design, and a rising window line and inclining bonnet provide it with a real sense of purpose. What’s more, this MPV rides on eye-catching 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, which are suitably lightweight to deliver enhanced efficiency. The car’s five-door body style ensures that access to both rear passenger compartments – and the boot – is easy to accomplish.
What makes the Galaxy stand apart from most in its class is that each individual seat is big enough to accommodate an adult, and there are generous levels of legroom for all. The middle row slides backwards and forwards too, allowing lots of flexibility. Each position provides plenty of support, and the light and airy feel to the cabin is accentuated by the vehicle’s all-round large windows. There are numerous useful cubby spaces featured throughout the cabin, including 1.5-litre-bottle-swallowing door bins. With all seats in place, cargo capacity stands at 300-litres; with rearmost seats flipped, this rises to 1,301 litres. With all but the front row folded, the Galaxy boasts an exceptional 2,339-litre load space.
The extremely driveable Galaxy comes with a 1.5-litre 160bhp petrol engine (with entry-level Zetec trim lines). This manages up to 43.5mpg, produces 149g/km of CO2 emissions and delivers 0-60mph in less than ten seconds. A 2.0-litre 150bhp diesel unit is the most efficient option, returning as much as 56.5mpg, while producing emissions as low as 129g/km. The vehicle can be specified with four-wheel drive too, which delivers enhanced grip on wintery surfaces.
Technology and safety
An eight-speaker sound system is included as standard, providing plenty of audio-listening options with, for instance, DAB radio, an AM/FM tuner and an MP3-compatible CD player. Bluetooth features too, allowing music streaming from your smartphone, as well as hands-free mobile communication. Ford’s SYNC 3 is another inclusion, and comes with an eight-inch touchscreen display.
A five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating is a sure sign that the Galaxy is extremely safe to travel in, and it comes fitted with an array of driver aids. Included are Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane-keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition – and Active Park Assist, which takes the guesswork out of parking.
