New Ford S-MAX

One of the finest people carriers available today, the Ford S-MAX is described by Auto Express as “the best MPV to drive, and it’s impressively practical too.” This capacious family car also delivers an exceedingly comfortable ride, whether it’s travelling on busy city streets, twisting country lanes or long stretches of motorway.

Exterior

Perfect for everyday motoring, the S-MAX features a boot with a low load lip and flat floor, which makes stowing and retrieving bulky items a straightforward process. The car comes with power-operated and heated door mirrors too – another example of the S-MAX’s many labour-saving qualities. This good-looking MPV rides on lightweight, eye-catching 17-inch alloy wheels, and is adorned with a number of body-coloured fixtures, such as the aforementioned wing mirrors.

Interior

The S-MAX comfortably seats five adults in its first and second rows, and a pair of younger passengers in its two rearmost seats. The middle row slides forwards and backwards (and reclines), making access to the rear as simple as possible. Front-row travellers are provided with adjustable positions, and the driver with a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, so establishing the positions is easy. There are plenty of stowage cubbies throughout, allowing everyone to safely put drinks to one side – and keep tabs on personal possessions. One of the most remarkable things about the S-MAX is that, with all seven seats in place, it still makes room for a 285-litre boot. With the third row folded, this increases to a very useful 700-litre luggage bay. Need even more cargo capacity? No problem. With all but the front row folded, a cavernous 2,020-litre load space becomes available.

Performance

Entry-level Zetec trim lines are fitted with a 1.5-litre 160bhp petrol engine, which manages up to 43.5mpg and produces a 149g/km CO2 emission figure. Optimal efficiency is delivered by models that are installed with a 2.0-litre 150bhp diesel unit, which returns as much as 56.5mpg, while producing emissions as low as 129g/km. If more power and pace is required, a 2.0-litre 240bhp petrol engine produces 345Nm of torque and 0-60mph in just over eight seconds.

Technology and safety

A SYNC 2 infotainment system – complete with eight-inch touchscreen – provides access to the car’s eight-speaker stereo. The latter features DAB digital radio, an MP3-compatible CD player and an AM/FM tuner. Bluetooth connectivity is included too, enabling music streaming and hands-free communication.

The best family cars come with a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating, which is exactly what the S-MAX has been awarded. The vehicle comprises an array of driving aids and passive protective features that help to make each journey as safe as possible – and take the stress out of driving. For instance, front and rear sensors are in place to assist with parking, making it a quick and easy process.
